NFL Overreactions Week 8: Green Bay tops Rodgers, Fields sparks Jets
USA TODAY Sports’ Prince Grimes ‘overreacts’ to some of the best games from Sunday’s Week 8 slate.
If Aaron Rodgers wants to finish his career with a win over each of the NFL’s 32 teams, he’ll have to play for at least one more year to do it — or he’ll have to hope for a Super Bowl rematch with his old team.
The Green Bay Packers picked apart the Pittsburgh Steelers 35-25 on the Week 8 edition of “Sunday Night Football.” Packers quarterback Jordan Love had a stretch of 20 straight completions. Tight end Tucker Kraft put the final cherry on top of “National Tight Ends Day” with a dominant performance: seven catches for 143 yards and two touchdowns.
Meanwhile, Rodgers completed two-thirds of his passes — finishing 24-of-36 for 219 yards and two touchdowns.
Despite the loss, the Steelers remain in first place in the AFC North with their 4-3 record. The Packers remain in first place in the NFC North at 5-1-1.
Here’s how it all went down on “Sunday Night Football”:
USA TODAY Sports provided live updates, highlights and more from the Week 8 “Sunday Night Football” matchup below. All times are Eastern.
Catch 2025 NFL action with Fubo (free trial)
- Aaron Rodgers will have to wait a little bit longer to beat all 32 teams: The Steelers’ veteran had the chance to become the fifth quarterback ever to beat every NFL team in his career with a win over the Packers, his former team. Instead, his former backup Jordan Love was the star of the show in Pittsburgh, throwing for 360 yards and three touchdowns.
- Jordan Love is a star: Could the Packers really have found another star quarterback? Playing against his old mentor for the first time, Love had one of the best games of his career. His 360 yards were the second-most he’s ever thrown in a game, his 134.2 passer rating was the second-highest he’s had in any game in his career — and most ever in a start — and his stretch of 20 straight completions tied Brett Favre for the second-longest completion streak in Packers franchise history.
- Don’t sleep on Tucker Kraft — like the NFL’s social media team did. Ahead of what the league dubbed “National Tight Ends Day,” the NFL posted a social media graphic featuring some of the league’s most prominent tight ends. Travis Kelce, George Kittle, Sam LaPorta, Brock Bowers, Trey McBride and Dalton Kincaid all made the cut. Kraft did not. He made his presence felt in a big way on “Sunday Night Football” on National Tight Ends Day with seven catches for 143 yards — the most receiving yards of any player on Oct. 26 — and two touchdowns.
- Steelers need to trade for a WR: The NFL’s trade deadline is just over one week away, and Pittsburgh general manager Omar Khan should be taking a look at what pass-catchers might be available. DK Metcalf leads all Steelers receivers with 27 catches, 461 yards and five touchdowns after his Week 8 performance. But behind him on the depth chart, there isn’t much competition for targets, limiting the ceiling of the Steelers’ passing offense. Roman Wilson, the top Pittsburgh receiver with 74 yards on Oct. 26, doubled his receptions total for the season with four catches on “Sunday Night Football.” His 74 receiving yards in Week 8 were more than double the 36 yards he had entering the matchup. If the Steelers are really “going for it” with a veteran quarterback like Rodgers, they’ll need to prove it by getting him more weapons to throw to.

The Steelers’ kicker is a perfect 4-for-4 on the night after a 56-yard field goal in the third quarter. He’s been good from 56, 50, 48 and 56 (again) yards out in the Oct. 26 game.
Pittsburgh extends its lead to 19-14 with 5:34 in the third quarter.
Steelers 19, Packers 14
Quarterback Aaron Rodgers threw forward a desperate, back-handed shovel pass as he was getting sacked, replay review revealed. Since running back Jaylen Warren was in the area of the incomplete pass, albeit as a blocker, Rodgers did not get flagged for intentional grounding either.
Williams, the Packers’ third-round pick out of TCU, bolted down the sideline after catching a swing pass from quarterback Jordan Love. His eight-yard catch was his fifth career reception and his first career touchdown.
The Packers cut the Steelers’ lead to 16-14 after the extra point. Pittsburgh will get the ball back with 8:48 in the third quarter.
Steelers 16, Packers 14
Pittsburgh gained just two yards on tight end Pat Freiermuth’s catch (and subsequent injury taking a tackle) on its first drive to open the third quarter. The Packers will begin their first possession of the second half on their own 10-yard line after a holding call on the ensuing punt.
Freiermuth appeared to sustain a lower-body injury after taking hits from a couple of Packers defenders. He walked off under his own power with trainers and is receiving a medical examination in the Steelers’ blue medical tent.
Green Bay drove into field goal range, but kicker Brandon McManus’ 44-yard field goal attempt sailed wide left. McManus is 0-for-2 on field goal attempts on “Sunday Night Football” in his first game back from a quad injury.
The Steelers will get the ball to begin the second half.
Pittsburgh had been unable to sustain a drive long enough to get into the end zone through most of the first half. But with just over 30 seconds left in the second quarter, quarterback Aaron Rodgers hit Metcalf with a quick slant for a two-yard touchdown pass.
The Steelers extend their lead to two scores, 16-7, after the extra point. The Packers will get the ball back with 34 seconds to play in the half and two timeouts.
Steelers 16, Packers 7

Pittsburgh gets the ball back on its own 16-yard line with four minutes left in the second quarter after Daniel Whelan’s punt.
Pittsburgh’s kicker is a perfect 3-for-3 on field goal attempts. His latest attempt, from 48 yards out, gives the Steelers the lead for a second time.
It’s 9-7 Steelers with 5:52 left in the half.
Quarterback Jordan Love had two passes fall incomplete, bookending a one-yard rush by running back Josh Jacobs. Green Bay was forced to punt on fourth-and-9.

Green Bay still leads, 7-6, with over 12 minutes left in the first half.
Packers 7, Steelers 6
Quarterback Jordan Love’s third-down deep pass to Romeo Doubs fell incomplete, and McManus’ long field goal try fell short of the goalposts.
The Packers still lead, 7-3, 10 seconds into the second quarter.
Green Bay will continue its drive in Steelers territory with a third-and-10 play to begin the second quarter.
Packers tight end Tucker Kraft’s 16-yard touchdown remains enough to keep his team ahead, while the Steelers are on the board with kicker Chris Boswell’s 56-yard field goal.
Pittsburgh didn’t get anything going in response to Green Bay taking its first lead of the night.
Packers punt returner Keisean Nixon muffed the catch on Corliss Waitman’s 47-yard punt, but fellow Packer Zane Anderson recovered. Green Bay will begin its third possession on its own 18 with 3:20 left in the first quarter.

Rodgers found Wilson, the second-year receiver out of Michigan, wide open down the right sideline on the third play of the Steelers’ opening drive. The young wideout hauled in the pass for a huge gain before stepping out of bounds.
Wilson’s 45-yard catch more than doubled the total output of his career to that point. Wilson had zero catches in an injury-shortened rookie season last year, and he had tallied 36 yards on four catches in 2025 entering the Week 8 game.
Pittsburgh’s defense broke up a short pass over the middle on third-and-1, and the Packers punted the ball away from their own 29-yard line.

Hafley spent the first decade of his coaching career at the college level with stops at Worcester Polytechnic, Albany, Pittsburgh and Rutgers. Though he played wide receiver in college for the Siena Saints, Hafley’s spent the majority of his coaching career on defense. He was either a defensive assistant or defensive backs coach in that first decade.
He followed former Rutgers coach Greg Schiano to the NFL in 2012 with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He coached defensive backs for the franchise in 2012 and 2013.
When Schiano was fired after the 2013 season, Hafley went to Cleveland for two seasons before a three-year stint in San Francisco. His year with Ohio State in 2019 led to his hiring at Boston College in 2020, where he spent four season and went 22-26 with one Bowl game victory.
Green Bay hired Hafley in 2024 and saw immediate improvement by both standard and advanced statistics. Green Bay went from one of the four worst run defenses in 2023 to a top-10 unit in 2024. By expected points added (EPA) per play, the Packers went from 23rd in 2023 to fifth in 2024, according to SumerSports.
Like Macdonald’s success with Baltimore in 2023, Hafley will likely get head coaching interest for the 2026 hiring cycle.
Pittsburgh’s jerseys tonight are a version of their 1933 Throwback Uniforms.. It’s a uniform that pays tribute to the 1933 team and the city of Pittsburgh.
Rodgers signed a one-year deal with the Steelers, which has a base value of $13.65 million, according to Spotrac. He received a $10 million signing bonus and will have a cap hit of $14.15 million in 2025.
Rodgers’ contract can be worth up to $19.5 million in total value thanks to a $5.85 million incentive package tied to the deal. His incentives for the 2025 NFL season are as follows:
- Playoff berth: $500,000
- Wild card win: $600,000
- Divisional win: $750,000
- Conference championship: $1 million
- Super Bowl win: $1.5 million
- League MVP: $1.5 million
Among the incentives, Rodgers is only considered “likely” to earn the $500,000 for the playoff berth, per Spotrac.com. That’s why his projected cap hit is $500,000 more than the $13.65 million base value of his deal. – Jacob Camenker
Mike Tirico will handle play-by-play duties during the game, with Cris Collinsworth providing color commentary and Melissa Stark reporting from the sidelines.
NBC’s weekly “Football Night in America” pregame show will begin at 7 p.m. ET and feature insight from a panel of analysts, including Maria Taylor, Jason Garrett, Chris Simms, Mike Florio, Devin McCourty, Tony Dungy, and more.
